This morning we began a new unit with the heading, "God's People in Egypt". As we continue forward from God's covenant with Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, we are digging more into Jacob's most beloved son, Joseph. Joseph's story is truly a picture of how much easier it is to see how God works in hindsight. Today, we talked about his early experience as Jacob's favored son, which brought on the jealousy and anger of his brothers. When Joseph had a dream that represented that his brothers would serve him, they were not at all pleased. So they sold him into slavery, and told their father that he had died. If the story ended there, this would be so disheartening. The good news is that in a couple of weeks, we will see God's plan play out. Like Joseph, Jesus was despised by many, who chose to crucify. But what they intended for harm, God used for good.
As we enter the Advent season today, remember that we live between the two Advents. Jesus came as a baby on that first night, AND he will come again to make all things new. Let's live in hope this season as we approach Christmas. Let's move toward the God, who loves us, and let's encourage our children to do the same. - Do you think Joseph's brothers made selfish decisions? Have you ever been wished that someone, perhaps a sibling, wasn't more favored than you?
- How hard is it to know what the Lord is doing in all circumstances? Is it always easy to trust Him? Do you think it was easy for Joseph as he was being sold into slavery?
Preschool
- Joseph's brothers were jealous and upset at him. Do you ever get upset or jealous? What can you do to keep from making bad choices (like sending your brother away) when you get upset or jealous?
- Who can you talk to when you don't understand what is going on? Your parents? Your teachers? God?
