A Reflection on Black History Month

In recent weeks at IBC, we’ve been discussing the importance of wrestling with our own personal past—our life story—to better understand our present and God’s intentions for our future. This is a vitally important part of our ongoing spiritual growth and development. God has made us who we are through the formative experiences and relationships of our lives: though our heritage, our heroes, our high points, and our hard times.

Blessed are the Curious, When Doubt Pays Off
One of the most memorable sermons I’ve ever heard at IBC was about doubt. The preacher’s name was Jay. To illustrate the importance of faith, Jay invited a volunteer to come to the stage. He held out a closed fist to the volunteer and said, “I'm going to give you whatever is in my hand. I'm telling you now, before I show you, that what's in my hand is one hundred dollars.”

There’s a whole lot that happens in the in-between, and it can feel like an endless sea of waiting. Like the three-hour line at Disney World in the sweltering Florida heat (where we were supposed to be this week).

Clearly my questions were due to a lack of faith. There was no scientific argument or mathematical logic that could prove otherwise. The problem was I didn’t want to find shelter and hide in my faith, I needed to live and breathe in it.
